James Sardeson and Marilla Sowl14 were married on 8 March 1855 in Argyle, Lafayette, WI, USA. James Sardeson, his wife Marilla Sowl and their son, Charlie, moved to Argyle in 1865. He had bought an interest in the flour mill. The Sardeson also operated the store in the "Old Rock Building", part of which is now Wenger's Hardware .
Sardeson's father was named William and the family originated in England. The Sardesons were all fine millers. Some of the Sardeson boys ran mills at what came to be Blanchardville and at Moscow, a village which no longer exists. There was also a mill at Scott's Diggings in the area later called Yellowstone. James went to operate the mill at Owego at a stream along the road to Fort Hamilton (South of Wiota, WI). The Owego mill was run by Robert Threadgold, but he did not want stores near his mill nor a settlement there. That is the reason people decided to establish Argyle and locate a mill on the Pecatonica. Threadgold died in 1854. James Sardeson operated the mill and the following year married Threadgold's widow, Marilla Sowl of a Revolutionary War family.
The Sardesons brought the first kerosene lantern to Argyle and were very proud of that. Everyone else used candles or went to bed when darkness came. The Sardesons eventually built a large home and also donated the land on which the Argyle Lutheran church is located.
